The first Mayan population on the beautiful Island of Cozumel were the Itzaes, around 2000 years ago, in the Classic Period (300 to 900 a.C.), those who created Chi Chen Itza. At that time the priests held the most important social position and decisions were made by them.
Cozumel Island was a Sacred Santuary for the Mayans, honoring especially the Mother Goddess Ix´chel. By 1200 Cozumel was an important link for commerce within Central America.
The name Cozumel comes from the mayan words Cuzaam luumil, meaning land of the swallows. The Leyend tells, that the Goddess in appreciation for honoring the femenine energy, she sent the swallows as a sign of blessings for the Island population and their visitors.
The Island is surrounded by beautiful turquoise water and white sandy beaches, extensive coral reefs and some iron shores.
